The New Orleans Hurricane

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 ounces amber rum
  • ¼ cup passion fruit juice or 1 tablespoon passion fruit syrup
  • 1 tsp superfine sugar
  • ½ teaspoon grenadine
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • Cherries and Orange slice to garnish
  • Ice Cubes

PREPARATION:

This drink can either be blended or shaken. To the shaker mix rum, passion fruit juice and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Add the grenadine, lemon juice and stir. Add ice cubes and shake. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish.

To the blender add everything at one time except the garnish.

Hurricane Drink History:
Pat O’Brien is credited for the creation of this very popular drink. He was forced by his distributors to purchase the amber rum in a large quantity before he could purchase the other spirits he really wanted. During WWII whisky was in short supply, but rum was flowing freely. It is now served in a very large glass – so double or triple your portion….make sure you are close to a chair….just like a hurricane it sneaks up on you.
